Van Hellsing (3.5/5)

This movie is hard for me to write a review for considering I really had no preformed expectations at all. I probably wouldn't even have gone to see it if it wasn't for a freak occurance that brought me to the theatre at the time it was playing. That being said this is the first movie I really had a clean slate going into, I knew it was a monster movie or something but other than that I didn't know much else.

The movie starts out with Dr. Frankenstien completing his work on his monster, but thats where the classic Frankenstien story ends, all of a sudden Count Dracula walks in and takes over, I will try not to ruin much of the story but this is essentially a compilation of all old monster movies just tied into one story. Yet somehow it kept me entertained.

The movie doesn't have an ounce of realism in it, whether the characters are falling 100 feet onto some rocks or getting picked up by a flying vampire and thrown 30 feet through a roof they always seem to shrug it off and get back up and start fighting. Yet you can forgive it considering it's a monster movie and I highly doubt that they were trying to make you believe it was based on a true story.

The graphics in the movie were quite well done at some parts, the final battle between wherewolf and dracula was completely CG, kind of hard to follow but still looked quite impressive, but there were many parts where you were left wondering how they let that out of the editing room, One scene Kate Beckinsale is swinging on a vine and drops onto a rock and her character literally shifts about a foot to the left on screen when she landed.

The movie itself was actually entertaining, maybe it has to do with the fact that I am a guy and I really didn't give a shit about the story, Kate Beckinsales ancestors made an oath to kill Dracula or none of there family would be able to enter heaven. She is also the last one in her family so she cant die before dracula otherwise they are doomed. Which is where Van Hellsing comes in, right after killing Dr. Jekkyl and Mr. Hyde he jumps right into this case and of course the good guys win in the end.

Pretty much an action movie, if you are into big stories then don't bother. But if you dont mind watching a whole bunch of fighting then go see it.
