and drifts out into the sea and ends up disrupting the Atlantic current which helps distribute all the warm air from the sun to the Northern Hemisphere, When this is blocked it triggers all sorts of freak storms ranging from; typhoons to hurricanes and tornados.
The story is about Jack Hall (Randy Quaid), who is one of the world’s top paleoclimatologist, and his wife who is a nurse at a hospital and his son who Randy barely gets to be with since he takes his work very seriously. This movie like many other "end of the world" movies has many sub plots. Nearly all these sub plots are just little breathers between the CGI storm scenes. Some of them try and touch your heart like Jack Hall’s wife who is a nurse at a hospital that is being evacuated decides to stay with a little kid cancer patient since he can't be moved without all of his machines that keep him alive. Others are predictable and cheap like Randy's son who joined the smart kids team because he has wants to get closer to the girl that is on the team.
Overall it’s a movie you have to see in theaters since you need to see all the storms on the big screen. Don't expect an Oscar performance out of this movie since it is just a special effects movie. One thing I did like about this "end of the world" movie was that it had to do with something that you couldn't stop, others like this that come to mind are like the movie "The Core" where a secret government project screws up the rotation of the earth causing major storms and such, In this they go to the center of the earth and stop the machine, which is lame or the classic comet that’s going to hit the earth. We simply go up in space and stop the comet. So this movie give you the feeling of a real end of earth situation that we can't stop which is a nice break from all the other garbage. I did like the ending with the astronauts on the space station looking down at the earth after all the storms amazed out how the air has never been that clear.
Also I hear several groups of hippies are trying to use this movie as an actual message about how we have to stop global warming before something like this happens, you can take a look at it here.
